Guinea Worm Disease

Guinea worm disease is nearing eradication, with human cases reduced from an estimated 3.5 million in 1986 to about 10 in 2025, a drop of more than 99.99%. The campaign relies on education, behavior change, safe drinking-water practices, surveillance, and partnerships with governments, focusing on six African countries: Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, and South Sudan. Remaining challenges include animal infections, particularly in dogs in Chad, and security-related access issues that complicate monitoring.
