Genome Duplication Is an Evolutionary Gamble

Genome duplication, or polyploidy, means an organism ends up with three or more chromosome sets rather than the usual two. Although often lethal, some duplications persist and can fuel evolutionary innovation, with examples seen in snails, plants, and other life forms. Researchers are using whole-genome sequencing to date duplications and study how organisms survive and adapt to the heavier genetic load, such as a recent case in the snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum.
